What is Adderall?
Adderall is a prescription medication that contains two drugs: amphetamine and dextroamphetamine. It belongs to a class of medications called stimulants. It’s most commonly used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). It’s also used to treat narcolepsy.
Adderall is considered a first-choice treatment option for ADHD. Studies of Adderall and Adderall XR show that the drugs improve attention and focus, and reduce impulsive behaviors. Between 75 percent and 80 percent of children with ADHD will see improved symptoms with the use of stimulants such as Adderall.
Adderall is also effective for increasing daytime wakefulness in people with narcolepsy, although there is little related research available.
Uses of Adderall
This combination medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brain. Amphetamine/dextroamphetamine belongs to a class of drugs known as stimulants. It can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems.
It may also help you to organize your tasks and improve listening skills. This drug is also used to treat a certain sleeping disorder (narcolepsy) to help you stay awake during the day. It should not be used to treat tiredness or to hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder.
Adderall Mode of Action
Adderall causes your brain to release more dopamine and norepinephrine.. “The release of these chemicals in the brain increases attention and concentration,” says Gene Beresin, MD, a psychiatrist and director of The Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Since Adderall can improve attention and focus, it can help people with ADHD develop better work habits and skills so that they are more equipped to perform socially, academically, and professionally, Beresin says.
Side Effects of Adderall
Loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach upset/pain, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, nervousness, and trouble sleeping may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, tell your doctor promptly.
Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.
This medication may raise your blood pressure. Check your blood pressure regularly and tell your doctor if the results are high.
Tell your doctor right away if you have any serious side effects, including: signs of blood flow problems in the fingers or toes (such as coldness, numbness, pain, or skin color changes), unusual wounds on the fingers or toes, mental/mood/behavior changes (such as agitation, aggression, mood swings, depression, abnormal thoughts, thoughts of suicide), uncontrolled movements, continuous chewing movements/teeth grinding, outbursts of words/sounds, change in sexual ability/desire, frequent/prolonged erections (in males).

I’ve been on adder all since I was in kindergarten and now I am in 12th grade. The medicine works don’t get me wrong but it makes me feel like a child in a paranormal movie sitting in the corner rocking back and forth scratching my head. It makes me depressed now that I’m older I cannot make this up! I hate taking it but it’s effective.

It really helped me when I would take it I would be preforming much better then normal and eliminated all symptoms of my ADHD but it made me feel like I didn’t do what I did. As in I would take it and when I would be off it I would feel like there was a completely different person who acted in place of me.

I have mixed results with Adderal, I really feel theirs a differance between manufactures. I have been greatly helped by this medication but not helped by the generic version produced by Camber. i am reading up because of this poor response, wanted to see if others had the same results.

J’ai eu la chance d’avoir un médecin qui a posé des questions et m’a diagnostiqué dans la quarantaine. Si j’avais été diagnostiquée plus tôt, ma vie aurait été meilleure. Je prends des capsules Adderall 30 mg XL et cela a changé ma vie. je me sens normale ! Pour mon traitement, cette forme et cette posologie fonctionnent très bien. Je le prends environ une heure avant de me lever et je suis capable de fonctionner et de rester concentré sur mon travail et à la maison. Cela ne me rend pas nerveux ou hyper, ne me coupe pas l’appétit (j’aimerais souvent que ce soit le cas !) J’ai encore besoin de temps en temps de faire une sieste pendant la journée et je n’ai aucun problème à m’endormir la nuit. J’ai toujours eu une pression artérielle basse, une température corporelle basse et une glycémie basse, mais ils me disent que mes niveaux de thyroïde vont bien. J’avais l’habitude d’avoir beaucoup de migraines et je devais avoir Imitrex Nasal avec moi tout le temps. Maintenant, j’en ai très rarement besoin. Pour moi personnellement, Adderall a été une bouée de sauvetage ! Je le prends comme indiqué, je n’en abuse pas, je vois mon médecin régulièrement et je peux mener une vie productive. Je suis dessus depuis une dizaine d’années maintenant, je suis une femme et j’ai 60 ans.
